What makes a band good? What makes them memorable? Is it the lyrics, the emotion the music creates, or is it a little of both? We all know "good" music derives from more than just lyrics and good music, though lately it seems as if contemporary music is drifting further away from the edge it used to have. It kept us anticipating the next album, not dreading it because, "they don't sound like they used to". Music comes to life when a story is used in synchronization with it. It seems to pop-out at us, as if reading a good book. What ever happened to that feeling?
First hearing them open for AFI way back in '03-'04, I was instantly blown away. It isn't often a whole band will keep your eyes locked on the stage through a whole set when you don't even know their songs. Their singer/guitarist has vocal range that can make a small girl sound like a man. He shreds across the fret board on his guitar with ease, and even once lifted it to his face to continue a solo with his teeth, as well as behind his back. They couldn't be a tighter group of musicians. They blow away clichés about current bands, and gain the respect of kids, teens, and adults alike. The five of them on stage instantly made a fan of me. It was always a lie when people said rock 'n roll was dead. Either that, or these guys have found out how to reanimate it. With a wide range in influence from Led Zeppelin to Pink Floyd, they listened to what was good at their age, and utilized it in their music. Not only that, but they've captured thousands of fans and had them all biting their nails in anticipation for their next album since their first CD. Claudio Sanchez, the voice/guitarist of the band, had written a story a few years back, and named the mother and father of the main character Coheed and Cambria. He began writing songs to go with the story. When Claudio formed a band, their first CD was about the beginning of the story. Since then, they've come this far, playing concerts for sold-out crowds, and fans still wait in anticipation for any addition to the story. A couple of years ago, Claudio had found an artist who can bring a face to each character in the story. They collaborated, and a comic book was brought to life. There are currently a few separate issues of these comic books, all telling the story of their music from beginning to end. Fans decipher lyrics and piece the puzzles together themselves, and the music couldn't be more animated. It's completely, and entirely alive. The death of a loved one, the search for hope, a never-ending angst, a violent secret...the story contains it all. However, like all stories, it must come to an end. Coheed and Cambria, the band, will one day finish telling their story, and it will then be just another story told by musicians to go down in history. They've remained one of the most unique bands of contemporary music, and shattered the notions of rock 'n roll being done and gone. Coheed and Cambria are rock n' roll's current heroes. No other group of musicians has constantly put out music so consistent, so full of emotion, with such a beautiful story. I've since then seen coheed a couple times. In all honesty, I can say they've only gotten more impressive in various ways since the first show I attended. Claudio Sanchez is, without a doubt, one of today's most talented individuals on a guitar. He's currently using his Minarik guitars on tours, and it's a great change. These guitars look as unique as their music is, and illuminate when in his hands on stage. Great melody, an awesome voice, and some good music backing it up, with an awesome story behind it all . This band has done, and is doing everything. If they have a show anywhere within the vicinity of your residence, I highly recommend going. It will not be your usual concert, and I can promise you won't be able to understand how such a voice can come from a person focusing on playing a solo.
