Tablature is a convenient way to write music. In guitar tablature (or "tab"), the strings are represented by a six horizontal lines...

In this case, the capital "E" represents the thick E-string, and the small "e" represents the thin e-string. The numbers tell you which fret you should place your finger at and the tab is read from left to right. To play the above tab, you would put your finger across the fifth fret of the guitar and pick the strings from high to low. Tablature does not tell you which finger to use, or the timing of a song. It is best to listen to the original track while you learn.
